tenkSolar has been a company that produce high energy output solar panels and system solutions for the solar industry. Its system has higher energy production for a given surface area, based on its unique design solution. The company closed in 2017, due to anticipated increasing failure well before the target service lifetime. IBT has conducted FA of tenkSolar system based on field test and Lab. test. IBT will host an on site workshop to help people who owns and operates tenkSolar system to fix and improve their existing system. Only until recently, scientist starts to understand the mechanism causing this light induced degradation (LID). Thermal management is one of the major issues for flat panel solar energy productions. Commercial solar PV products mostly convert solar energy to electricity at a conversion efficiency (CE) of around 20%, while the majority of the solar energy (typically >70%) was absorbed to heat up the solar panel before eventually dissipated to the environment.


Unfortunately, there is no practical solution in the market to mitigate the problem with reasonable cost yet. This means, in the places and times when the solar power is at its peak value, most of the solar panel will have a CE loss, which reduces the energy production and increases LCOE. In many situations, this reduction of CE causes solar panel absorb more energy, which heat up solar panel temperature even more.


Based on the field failure analysis, the extreme condition such as thermal stress in the hot spot in solar panel speed up the failure. To extend solar service lifetime from 25(30)-50 years, valid solution to remove/reduce extreme condition is necessary. IBT has developed a Nano-Heatsink (Nano-HS) technology to reduce solar panel peak temperature and to lowers the LCOE of solar energy.

The cost of Lithium based battery has continuously gone down over time. Even with the reduce cost of battery, most residential based solar energy storage system cost more than $10k to install, and will unlikely to provide enough return during the service lifetime.

IBT is in the process to develop a system solution, which allow significant reduction of the cost while allow solar energy system to be able to handle emergency situation for residential applications. The estimated final cost can be less than $3k, which allow typically family recoup its investment within the first couple of years.
