Technology to disinfect SARS-CoV-2, Stop spread of COVID-19 virus

There are a number of technologies that can be used to disinfect COVID-19 viruses. Currently CDC has allow Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI), vaporous hydrogen peroxide (VHP) and moist heat can be utilized under certain conditions [1,2]. However, there is no FDA approved technology or product yet. Each of the technologies has its own limitations. UVGI uses UVC light to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 virus, currently has been reported to be effective if a correct dose is reached.

However, the UVC light does not normally exist at the earth surface and can be easily absorbed. Different light sources can generate UVC light with different peak wavelength as shown below. When use disinfection of face masks, the surface of the face mask is not flat. One of the major concern is that depend on the surface of the face mask, the dose at different locations varies significantly. In most cases, it show effective, but may leave some risks during operation, where certain areas (typically called weak spots) are not exposed to the correct dose. The other concern is listed at CDC website [1,2]. Where the shadow effect causes the weak spot, which will also limits its effectiveness.

Although it can be argued that if proper operation process can be maintained, the UVGI can be utilized to effectively inactivated again COVID-19. In practice, a small change (~1%) of infected areas left may leads to significant penalty. Therefore, it is desired to have technology and device solution to minimize impact of weak spots and shadow effect, and the technology solution to ensure effectiveness against COVID-19 and future infectious diseases.

IBT is in collaboration with National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and NIAID Regional Biocontainment Laboratories (RBLs) to understand this process and develop technology to effectively disinfect SARS-CoV-2, and help to stop COVID-19 spread.
